What is VOIP (voice over internet protocol)?
Q. My phone works fine, why do I need
this?
A. It's a lot cheaper.
Q. How cheap?
A. How does 10c nationwide un-timed phone calls sound?
Q. What's the catch?
A. The quality of calls is not always as good as a standard
phone line and it can be tricky to setup.
Q. What kind of voice quality can I
expect?
A. It is comparative to a mobile phone call.
VOIP is new technology and is starting
to make its way into the domestic market. Corporate
business has been using this technology for years to
save on call costs.
Unfortunately getting the correct equipment
and broadband connection can be a little tricky. However
after everything is setup it works like a standard phone,
in fact it uses a standard handset. You can even use
your existing cordless phone.
You can also do other cool things with VOIP.
Case Study: Sam and Liz have
just moved from Perth to Sydney, they have been living
in Perth for 15 years and have left lots of friends
and family behind.
Sam and Liz have just setup up a VOIP
number in Sydney. They have also setup a VOIP number
for Perth, this means all of their family and friends
can call Sam and Liz at local call rates even though
they are using a regular Telstra phone line and Sam
and Liz are answering the call here in Sydney.
How much does this cost to setup?
If you already have broadband it typically
costs between $300 and $400 to setup including labor
and hardware. It will add approximately $10-$30 per
month to your broadband costs.
If you don't have broadband it typically
costs between $400 and $500 to setup including labor
and hardware. It will add approximately $50-$60 per
month to your telecommunication costs.
How much money will it save?
Typical savings on a standard phone
bill are 40%. Please send me your broadband bill and
phone bill. You can fax it to 02 8080 8376 for a quick
reply. I'll work out how much money it will save and
how much it will cost to have VOIP installed.
