Change outgoing mail server in Outlook Express.

Question

Why do I need to do this? Why can't I send emails from outside my home or office network?

Answer

In an attempt to stop spammers using ISP's mail servers, ISPs started blocking access to outgoing mail servers unless the computer in question is connected to their network.

Example

If you use Bigbond as your ISP; unless your connected to the internet via Bigpond you can't send any emails using their mail server.

What this means is that if your using a wireless hotspot or a hotel to access the internet you will have to use their mail server to send emails. This information is normally located on a notice board or available from staff.

Step 1

Load Outlook Express

Step 2

In the 'Tools' menu click 'Accounts..'

Step 3

Click the 'Mail' tab

Step 4

Double click the first account in the list of accounts.

Step 5

Click the 'Servers' tab.

Step 6

Clear the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP)' and replace it with the mail server details of your current location.

Step 7

Click 'OK' to set the changes on the Properties screen, then click 'Close' to close the Internet Accounts screen.

Notes

If you have more than one account in your list of mail accounts you need to repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 for each account.

Don't forget to change it back when you get home.
